Mixed Music and Metaphors
The focus of this drum and bass audio drama musical is about eating disorders and the stigma surrounding them. It’s clear the writer, Christopher Hogg did a decent amount of research into medical conditions like hypertension and anorexia. However, the first episode might offend some listeners as being insensitive to people who suffer from these health concerns. Keep listening. It might get weird by the middle and ramble on at times near the end, but the amount of work that went into this shows and it’s only six short episodes.
The drum and bass angle is unique for an audio drama while a musical is not. It’s also unclear whether the music is happening in the world or out of the world of the story. The musical artist who produced the soundtrack, Girls Take Action (GTA) detracts from the message this audio drama is trying to say. It’s like having a mosh pit in the middle of a kid’s concert. They’re fine on their own, but do not mesh well together.
Drum and Bass, UK and US
This is clearly meant for a UK audience. While not super important to the plot, no information is given about the Brit School that Cassie and Corrie want to attend. It’s assumed the listener will know without having to look it up.
Corey’s plan doesn’t make sense either, as the other characters around him point out. However, the suspension of disbelief starts with Corey being certain that getting accepted into the Brit School will cure his hypertension. It’s one of those things that you can either go with or not, but you can’t ignore it.
By far the best parts of this drum and bass musical audio drama are the security guard and the farmer. The former (Jason) is like Paul Blart without the bad physical humor and annoying slapstick. The latter is a wise mentor figure that could be interpreted as a magical negro archetype but done better and without relying on offensive stereotypes.
Overall, give this is a listen. It helps support the group and it’s not much of a time commitment. Even the last episode, which is the longest of the six goes by fast as a lot is just music from the group GTA.
