The One Where She Dies Offscreen

Written by Jill Korn and mixed by Alex Bennett, “Confessional” is a historical fiction audio drama not about Joan of Arc—as the prologue opening might have you believe—but instead her effect on those closest to her. Once introduced in a way only a story can pull off, the focus shifts to two lesser-known historical figures. Baron Gilles de Rais and an unknown young man.

The episode’s description does little to make sense of the 52-minute audio drama. Supposedly it “explores the link between the two events, and examines how powerful men can seem to be untouchable and unstoppable.” However, the story spends more time on the Baron’s story and the other point of view feels like an afterthought.

Historical Research > Sound Design > Storytelling

Having interviewed Jill Korn and Alex Bennett on an episode of the Audio Drama News and Interviews podcast, I knew sound design was important, as was the historical verisimilitude of the world. It shows in the focus on them rather than the story. Not only is Joan’s death off-screen but the bishop’s reason for being imprisoned is skipped entirely. We don’t even learn the nature of the crime the bishop committed until near the end. On one end, it’s understandable, it would be a different story. Unfortunately, it’s unclear what story Korn and crew are going for in the first place.

It’s possible to have both worldbuilding and story in an audio drama. Often times is the key ingredient for making both elements work. The fact that “Confessional” skips over so many inherently dramatic moments are one of its main issues. That said, while the story’s execution didn’t work for me, the sound design almost makes up for it. This is one of those times where a creator’s intent affects the enjoyability of a story in the form of boredom on the individual’s part.
